SQUASH

Reader's tip. Mert Grief writes As for squash, my favorite is the Acorn Squash, it will grow and do quite well on a trellis and the fruit is sweet when ripened to a golden orange. I slice them in half and bake them with a touch of butter and a spoon full of brown sugar........squash just does not get much better than that.

PESTS:
Reader's tip: Chester Burley of CT writes that he uses marigolds to discourage insects. 'Plant marigolds thru out your garden.' This is a nice earth friendly way to avoid insects and other pests in your garden.

When a squash is ready to harvest do not twist it off the vine. Instead use scissors to avoid damaging the plant.
